Ologe – A Nigerian Skincare Brand To Try

The Nigerian skincare space is growing by the second and it is always a thing of joy when I find a brand that is genuinely interested in helping people achieve healthy glowing skin with the right products.

This is the case with Ologe – an artisanal skincare brand based in Lagos, Nigeria.

My first impression of Ologe products came from checking them out on Instagram. Their branding is minimalist yet aesthetically pleasing, their packaging is sustainable and the ingredients used in formulating their products are pretty premium stuff. Ingredients over packaging oooo!

When the brand owner, Seun Young reached out to me for a collaboration I didn’t hesitate at all.

Ologe creates simple, effective solutions specifically for oily & combination skin. Not to say that other skin types cannot benefit from their products.  Their range of products is great for face, body, and hair. Talk about multifunctional!

The brand sent me a whole box of their products which includes

  • OHC Soap
  • Brightening Toner
  • Adunni Oil
  • Rose Oil
  • Detox Clay Mask

I have been using these products for about four weeks now and that is enough time to share my thoughts.

On my Instagram page, I shared detailed first impressions of the brand and products. You can watch that here.

So, what do I think of Ologe Skincare Products? Let’s find out, shall we!

OLOGE OHC SOAP

Ologe Nigerian Skincare OHC Soap

What it is  – The OHC soap is pretty much African black soap combined with other cleansing and exfoliating ingredients.

Ingredients –  Black soap, Honey, Helianthus annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Avena Sativa (Oat) Powder, Hibiscus Sabdariffa (Hibiscus) Petal Powder, Coffea Arabica Powder, Activated Charcoal, Bentonite, Fragrance Oil, Preservative

Packaging – OHC Soap comes in a 250g tub. A little goes a long way so this would definitely last you a while.

Ologe Skincare African Black Soap

Price – N2,900

Texture and Aesthetics – The smell of this soap reminds me of chocolate brownies, I swear I almost tasted it lol. It also has hibiscus petals which give it that extra oomph! We all know how boring black soap can look sometimes. It equally feels gentle on the skin, non-stripping, and non-drying.

How To Use – OHC soap can be used daily for cleansing your skin. You only need one finger scoop to do the job. This soap can also be used to wash your hair for people who use black soap for their hair.

Thoughts –  I’m a huge lover of African Black Soap and this one from Ologe pretty much does the job. I use it on my body and it isn’t drying at all. I also like the fact that it has Oat powder which is famous for its cleansing and exfoliating properties coupled with Activated Charcoal and Bentonite clay which are great for reducing skin oiliness and minimizing skin inflammation. If you are a fan of black soap this is one you should consider trying.

OLOGE BRIGHTENING TONER

Ologe Nigerian Skincare AHA PHA Brightening Toner

What it is – The Ologe brightening toner is an exfoliating toner that combines AHAs, PHAs, and Hydrosols to help clear the pores, reduce breakouts while hydrating and improving skin complexion.

Ingredients – Rosewater, AHA fruit acids (glycolic, citric, malic), Gluconolactone (a polyhydroxy acid), Green tea extract, Polysorbate 20, Optiphen Plus, Glycerin, Tea tree oil.

Packaging – The Brightening toner comes in a plastic see-through 100ml spray bottle which makes for easy dispensing.

Price – N3,240

How-To Use –  Seeing as the brightening toner contains chemical exfoliants it is best used 2-3 times a week, especially for beginners. You can increase to daily use once your skin has built a tolerance to the product.

Thoughts – I particularly enjoy using this toner because it not only exfoliates but also hydrates. The combination of AHAs and PHAs is also a banger. We have all heard of Glycolic acid (AHA) and Salicylic acid (BHA), however, PHAs like Gluconolactone is rarely spoken of.

What are PHAs you ask?

Polyhydroxy acids are quite similar to alpha-hydroxy acids, they help slough off dead skin cells to help skin appear smoother but do so more gently without increasing sun sensitivity. PHAs also offers many of the same benefits as other exfoliants without threatening your acid mantle. This includes softer, smoother skin, more even skin tone, and reduced signs of cosmetic aging.

I think you get the drift already. I’m not new to exfoliating toners and from my experience thus far this one is pretty gentle and less irritating. You might experience a slight stinging when you begin using it however it’s nothing to worry about. If you are looking to try chemical exfoliation and not ready to commit to a single acid toner totally consider the Ologe Brightening Toner.

Please ensure you apply sunscreen regularly when using acids. Ologe also retails sunscreen so hit them up!

OLOGE ADUNNI OIL BLEND

Ologe Adunni Oil

What it is –  Adunni Oil is totally self-care aid. It has a self-indulging fragrance that makes you want to hug yourself once you apply it😌😌. This and it’s moisturizing and brightening effect are why you should add this to your self/skincare routine.⁣

Ingredients – Helianthus annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Chamomile, Lavandula Angustifolia (lavender) oil, Boswellia Carterii (Frankincense) Oil, Cymbopogon Martini (Palmarosa) Oil.

Packaging – The Ologe Adunni Oil blend comes in a 100ml plastic bottle with a pump which makes for easy dispensing.

Price –  N3,840

Texture and Aesthetics – Adunni Oil combines a blend of non-comedogenic carrier oils and essential oils. It is quite lightweight and goes on smoothly on the skin. The warm scent of lavender also makes it a great oil for aromatherapy.

How-To Use – Adunni oil is quite multifunctional on some days I use it on my natural hair to seal the ends, on other days I also use it on my body for that moisturizing effect. Please take note that oils are not enough to moisturize your skin. I recently tried using it as an oil cleanser and it did the job as well. So, if you have oily skin and are interested in oil cleansing (the first step when double cleansing) you can try your hands on Adunni oil.

Learn more about Oil Cleansing here.

Thoughts –  As mentioned above this is one oil that is versatile and can be used in many ways. The oils used are rich in antioxidants and have moisturizing properties. If you don’t have allergies to essential oils this is one you should totally add to your oil stash.

OLOGE ROSE OIL

Ologe Skincare Rose Oil

What it is: the Rose Oil Blend? It’s a lightweight facial oil with vitamin c and squalane to help with reducing spots, improving texture, and keeping your skin moisturized.

Ingredients: Helianthus annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Squalane, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Lavandula Angustifolia (lavender) oil, Boswellia Carterii (Frankincense) Oil, Rose Damascena (Rose) Petal.

Packaging: – The Ologe Rose oil comes in a 30ml amber colored bottle with a dropper.

Texture and Aesthetics – Rose Oil is a lightweight facial oil blend infused with Vitamin C and Rose petals. It smells so good and glides smoothly on the skin. The infused petals also give it a luxurious aesthetic that is super pleasing to the eye.

How-To Use – Use in the AM or PM routine after cleansing, toning, and water-based serums but before heavy creams. You can also decide to mix it with your moisturizer. The choice is yours.

Price  – N4,560

Thoughts – Rose oil has to be my all-time favorite product after the brightening toner. This is because it combines two of my favorite ingredients – SQUALANE and VITAMIN C.

Squalane is a lightweight facial oil that hydrates and softens the skin with anti-aging benefits while Vitamin C is a popular antioxidant that is also great for brightening skin complexion. The derivative of Vitamin C  (Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate – an oil-soluble form of Vitamin C), used is equally stable so I don’t have to worry about it going bad quickly. If you are looking for a facial oil that hydrates and brightens the skin; Ologe Rose Oil is your best bet.

OLOGE DETOX CLAY MASK

Ologe Skincare Detox Mask

What it is – A combination of Kaolin Clay and Bentonite clay in powder form

Packaging – The Ologe Detox clay mask comes in a 50g tub.

Ingredients – Kaolin and Bentonite Clay

How-To Use – With this mask less is more. All you need is 1-2 teaspoons of the powder mixed with clean water.  Apply to clean dry skin and leave on for 10-20 minutes max. Never let a mask get too dry on your skin. Once dry, rinse off with water and continue with your routine. I like to do this before cleansing.
Also note, never mix the powder in a metal bowl and with a metal spoon. Metal can make it lose its efficacy.

Ologe Skincare Detox Mask

Price – N1,970

Thoughts: Clay masks are a great addition to your skincare routine when dealing with acne-prone/oily skin because they are able to absorb oil, dirt, and other gunk from your skin. I am not new to Kaolin and Bentonite Clay Masks as I have quite a stash. When I need to give myself a “spa day” at home the Detox Clay Mask is my go-to.

That’s it people my review of the entire Ologe Skincare Line

In conclusion;

I love every product from the brand and my favorites are the toner and oil blends. I also appreciate that the brand pays attention to aesthetics and ingredients. However, their ingredients aren’t listed on their packaging so this is an area I would encourage them to work on.

Along with the products, I also received a personalized skincare routine chart and instruction manual. This isn’t something a lot of home-grown brands do and I am really impressed by this.

I have equally seen improvement in my skin texture and oil production. It takes a while to fade hyperpigmentation hence I am not in a rush to see magical results.
