Trying new things and discovering things that live under the sea…
Recently I’ve been willing myself to try new things like filming a lookbook video and adding new products to my skin care routine.
My latest feat undoubtedly has me raising the bar.
The Genesis
The other day, I was having a craving for seafood (read as prawns) and then I decide to “think out loud” on Twitter.
Two people recommended Ocean’s Basket at the Ikeja City Mall.
I got to googling, read online reviews, checked their website menu and decided to give it a shot.
The D-Day
It may look like your average Lagos restaurant joint, but Ocean’s Basket is quite the ish.
I’ve been to the mall a number of times but I never did pay attention to the seafood restaurant adjacent to the cinemas. Not like I had any business there though.
Ambience
On entering the restaurant I was warmly welcomed by the staff and directed to a table fit for one.
The decor was very appealing and I was particularly impressed with the funny inscriptions that doted their walls and tables. Y’all know I’m a sucker for inscriptions and corny lines. The Menu
Prior to my visit, I had decided on what I was going to order. I set a budget of N10,000 and told myself that nothing was going to make me exceed this.
For starters, I ordered the garlic bread this cost N850.
As a bush girl, I didn’t really know what to expect but it turned out heavenly, the soft warm bread topped with cheese melted in my mouth like butter and I wish I didn’t gobble them up so quickly.
At this moment I needed something to step down my appetizer and so I ordered for the Ocean’s Basket Special this is a cocktail mix of berries and fruits, it cost me N1500 it tasted really good too. Oh so refreshing!
At this moment my stomach was starting to fill up and I hadn’t even satisfied my main cravings. Blame it on the size of my tummy!
After a couple of minutes, my Prawns Special platter (12 Prince Prawns) and Chips arrived this costs me 4250 + 1000 respectively. I equally ordered a bottle of mineral water at N350.
My platter came with 4 different sauces but I stuck with what I was familiar with. Can you guess? If you said Ketchup, you’re absolutely right!
In all honesty, I didn’t know what to expect with the prawns. I’ve always enjoyed eating crayfish (it’s actually called krill) and shrimp so I felt the taste would be similar.
How did it taste?
There are no exact words to describe its taste. It wasn’t quite like the crayfish I was used to. It was meatier, juicier but less tasty(not in a bad way though).
Did I enjoy it though? – Absofreakinglutely.
Will I be revisiting them anytime soon? – Yezzzir!
Final Thoughts
I spent a total of N8,500 on my meal and it was totally worth it. The portions were great and the food was well prepared and served. I got so full I couldn’t even have dessert.
The waiter was really good and the customer service was excellent. I also liked the fact that I could access their menu online before visiting. That way I could set a spending limit and avoid washing plates.
I wish they had more affordable and smaller platters for 1 because honestly there was no way I could finish 12 King Prawns in one sitting. I eventually had to request a doggy bag.
All in all, I’ll rate Ocean’s Basket Sea Food Restaurant 8 over 10.
If ever you’re craving some prawns, sushi or calamari Ocean’s Basket is your go-to!
I’m looking to explore more recipes and satisfy more cravings this year,
Hopefully, those cravings don’t have me ordering Pizza from the abroad because I hear The White Rabbit in Oxford is “bloody” good 😉
Ever tried seafood? What was your experience like?
Tell me all about it in the comments section.
Until next time,

I remembered some time last year when I was in Lagos, I was opportune to eat at their Island branch. I had calamari, sushi and prawns. I was so filled up I couldn’t move. It was very tasty, rich and delicious. And it was my fist time eating a full plate of seafood.
It has topped my list ever since of restaurant to visit whenever I am in Lagos.
BTW, that’s my big headed friend in your tweet, Zichat. I’m not surprised, she loves food, lols.

Hello Wan! Is that your name? I’m from New Orleans, Louisiana, in the United States. We’re surrounded by water here and seafood is very cheap. So you’re from Nigeria? I’d love to visit there one day.
