About Last Week’nd | A visit to Erin Ijesha Waterfalls

Last weekend I took a trip to the Erin Ijesha Olumirin Waterfalls and I’m here to tell you all about it.

I just love how these titles come to me with so much ease, ain’t I just a blessed somebody? Anyways, welcome to another weekend. I hope we are having a good one? Mine has been fair enough.

The title of this post kind of reminds me of the movie “About Last Night” but this has nothing to do with romance and comedy. You should check the movie out tho, in case you haven’t seen it.

So down to the gist; I mentioned in my previous post that my weekend was super and yeah sure it was. I finally took a trip to the tourist site I mentioned here and it was worth it.

For those who are not aware, I’m currently serving my fatherland (read as – observing my compulsory 1 year National Youth Service) and as life would have it I was posted to the Land of Virtue, a.k.a Osun State.

There’s not much going on here as regards social life yet the Olumirin Waterfalls located at Erin Ijesa was definitely on my list of places to visit.

I’ve been putting off this trip for awhile now but when my friends suggested we go last weekend I said hell yeah why not, as I’d be leaving the State very soon.

The Waka Waka Squad

So we made the necessary arrangements and met up last weekend to visit the Waterfalls people keep talking about. We took off around 10 AM thereabouts and got there by noon. When we arrived our destination we had to pay a gate fee of N500 (Five hundred naira) before we could be allowed inside, unfortunately I couldn’t go in with my portable camera unless I paid another 5h so i stuck with my phone camera instead.

Once inside; the picture taking began don’t you trust us ladies? The guys immediately became our photographers they had no choice.
We had no tour guide so we practically had to find our way ourselves. It wasn’t difficult though as other fun seekers were present. I was quite disappointed because I expected someone to give us a little history and take us around.

According to reviews I read on the internet prior to the trip, it is said that the waterfalls has seven levels and at the very top lies a village which is practically located in Ekiti State. Meaning anyone who gets to the top and gets to the village has totally traveled to Ekiti State by foot. Mind blown yeah? I definitely wanted to get the top I didn’t care how daunting it was going to be.

We started at the first level, obviously! Here we took tons pictures, goofed around and also literally took a shower. The water was super coooolllllddddd and the rocks were super slippery.

So heads up if you ever plan to visit, take along a change of clothes or swim wear and footwear is not an option in the water. Also ensure you take a shower cap if you don’t want to ruin your weaves or end up with wet hair.

I ditched my shower cap and stuck with this raffia hat previously styled here and here because Kool Keed. I didn’t take off the hat and the sunnies because I’m so narcissistic; so you’ll definitely see them in most of the pictures. Bear with me!

We quickly moved on to the second level because that’s majorly where the water is. The pressure of the water was heavier here; only the brave could go in the water to take pictures. If your phone gets into the water ehn issa goner. A little water got into my phone lens and the back camera became useless for the rest of the trip. I had to resort to selfies and a friend’s phone.

So if you are at this stage handle your phones and cameras with care. You can also get your picture taken by commercial photographers around. At this level I was more about the pictures so I didn’t get in the water much. Peep me feeling like a soupa model.

Many people usually stop at the second level; get in the water, eat, drink, chill. But I’m not many people. I’m a stubborn somebody so I persuaded my friends that we move on to the next level. I mean why would I come all the way, play around in the water and go back home? When it’s not a pool party? I really wanted to get to Ekiti on foot so I could check it off my South Western States to visit list.

So the real waka began. At the third level there is no sign of the waterfall. It’s all greenery, bushes and rocks. I can proudly say I’ve gone hiking because that’s what we did. WE WENT HIKING!!! There are no stairs here so we had to hang on to rocks and tree roots to avoid falling it was not easy yet it was fun.

We stopped to rest and take pictures too.

It took us about 30 -45 minutes to get to the 7th level but it felt like 2 hours. For someone who’s kinda used to trekking it was fun, though my thighs felt it days after. The villagers at the top welcomed us. They weren’t surprised to see us so its safe to say that its a usual occurrence.

The villagers directed us to the source of the waterfall, a stream that flows all the way from Ekiti; and they also allowed us to take some fruits from the trees around. So Yes! I walked all the way from Osun State to Ekiti in 45 minutes. Wowzerr!!

After satisfying ourselves and taking more pictures as evidence that we did get to the top, because so many people kept doubting when I told them I got to the very top, we begun the trek back.

The trek back wasn’t as rigorous as when we were ascending. We kept ourselves motivated by chanting funny songs, talking about tourism and culture in Nigeria and making silly videos. I just might drop a few on my Instagram page . Follow me there so you can catch up.

We finally got back to the first level, back to square one. At this sage everyone was tired and slightly dirty. So we got into the water again, washed and cooled off at the same damn time. Then we changed into appropriate clothing and started the journey back home.

Was it worth it? Yes! Every opportunity to appreciate the wonders of creation is definitely worth it? Would I be going back? Sure! Why not! Perhaps this time I would get to enjoy the water more and focus less on documenting.
